Diarrhea:

Diarrhea is not a disease but a symptom of colitis, characterized by loose or watery stools, an increased urge for bowel movements, abdominal pain, cramps, and bloating.

The most common cause is consuming contaminated food or water. During diarrhea, the body can lose a significant amount of water and minerals, leading to dehydration. It occurs due to:

  1. Poor absorption of water from stoolsby the intestines
  2. Accelerated intestinal transit, preventing stool from drying
  3. Abnormal passage of water and minerals from the body into the intestines

Diarrhea can cause dehydration symptoms, including:

  • Increased thirst
  • Dry mouth and skin
  • Less frequent urination (urine becomes darker)
  • Irritability
  • Muscle cramps
  • Loss of appetite
  • Physical weakness
  • Sunken eyes
  • Shock or fainting

Common Causes:

  • Food poisoning
  • Viral gastroenteritis
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Chronic intestinal diseases(Celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
  • Antibiotics(which can disrupt gut flora and reduce intestinal absorption)
  • Stress and anxiety

Dehydration and its associated complications are the main risks of diarrhea.

Dietary Recommendations:

  • During diarrhea, only liquidsshould be consumed initially to prevent dehydration.
  • Gradually introduce certain foods, avoidingthose that worsen cramps and diarrhea, such as:
  • Dairy products
  • Citrus juices
  • Meat
  • Spicy foods
  • Sweets
  • High-fat foods(fried foods)
  • Wheat-based foods(bread, pasta, pizza)
  • Corn and bran(high in fiber)
  • Raw vegetables and most fruits (except bananas)
    • Start with starchy foods, then gradually introduce vegetables and fruits.
    • Protein-rich foods should be added last.

Treatment:

  • Some medications may prevent the body from eliminating the infectionand provide no real benefit.
  • Antiperistaltic drugsslow down intestinal movements.
  • Other medications act as antacids, reducing water secretion in the intestines.
  • Antibiotics are only useful if the diarrhea is caused by bacteria or parasites.
