- Flu:
Flu is a contagious infectious disease caused by the influenza virus (A, B, C, or D), occurring in seasonal autumn-winter epidemics.
It manifests as fever, headaches, cough, pharyngitis, muscle pain, asthenia, and loss of appetite.
Complications may include secondary bacterial pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, acute pulmonary edema due to left heart failure, myocarditis, rhabdomyolysis, or lymphocytic meningitis.
- Cold:
A cold is a viral infection of the nasal cavities and throat.
It causes sore throat, sneezing, nasal congestion and discharge, pharyngitis, conjunctivitis, myalgia, fatigue, headaches, and loss of appetite.
Complications may occur in at-risk individuals (asthmatics, those with respiratory insufficiency) or vulnerable populations (children, elderly, smokers).
Average duration: 11 days in case of common cold.
The body encounters and neutralizes cold viruses several times a year, but when a cold appears, it means the immune system has failed to block the infection.
It can lead to bacterial superinfection (by pneumococci), sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema that may evolve into viral myocarditis.
- Rhinitis:
Allergic rhinitis is an abnormal sensitivity or an exaggerated immune response to a foreign substance (allergen), such as pollen, mold, animal dander.
Upon contact with the eyes or respiratory tract, the immune system releases histamine and other inflammatory agents, causing blood vessel dilation, repeated sneezing, tingling and itching in the throat, palate, and nose, tearing, eye irritation, sinus pressure, and altered taste, smell, and hearing.
Rhinitis can be vasomotor, persistent, and non-allergic. The person appears permanently congested.
Triggers include stress, temperature/humidity changes, smoke, dust, mites, strong odors, chemicals, or allergens in the person’s environment (home or work), or even medication or hormonal shifts.
If untreated, it may lead to chronic sinusitis, is associated with asthma, and in children increases the risk of otitis media.
Genetic predisposition (atopic background) plays a major role.
Advice:
– Hygiene: Wash hands with soap or alcohol-based solution after contact with a sick person.
– Protect against oral/nasal droplets by coughing/sneezing into disposable tissues.
– Avoid confined spaces.
– Nutrition: Zinc promotes apoptosis of cells infected by influenza virus; zinc + copper supplementation is beneficial.
Other trace elements, vitamins (A, E), and hydration are also recommended.
– Rest is essential for proper recovery.
