Musculoskeletal disorders and functional impairment

The musculoskeletal system is a system of organs that gives humans the ability to move physically, it allows locomotion (walking, running, swimming), posture (sitting or standing), gripping, verbal communication (phonation) and non-verbal communication (mimicry), maintaining the structure and shape of the body, protecting most of the viscera, some vital functions such as breathing (ventilation) and food functions (chewing and swallowing) as well as urinary and fecal continence.

It is composed of bones that form the skeleton, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, cartilage and connective tissues.

Most musculoskeletal diseases cause either local pain or pain associated with reduced mobility and which can lead to disability. Pain can affect the muscles and intervertebral discs, tendon and nerve problems affect the neck and upper limbs more, while osteoarthritis affects the lower limbs more.

There is no single causal factor, except in the case of accidental injuries. Repetitive or sustained secondary overload can damage the various tissues of the musculoskeletal system. Too little activity can lead to deterioration of muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and even bone.
