Renal Colic :
Renal colic is a symptom, not a disease. It results from increased pressure in the kidney due to an obstruction in the urinary tract.
Obstruction (internal or external) of the urinary system — from the kidney to the urethra — can lead to urine stagnation and kidney distension.
Causes include kidney stones, tumors, and inflammatory or fibrous strictures of the excretory tract. External compression can stem from gynecological tumors, surgical complications, or fluid accumulation.
Symptoms:
– Sudden, intense pain in the lower back and abdomen.
– Moderate pain in the side.
– Nausea and vomiting.
– Burning sensation when urinating.
– Frequent and urgent urination.
– Presence of blood in urine.
Renal colic can evolve into pyelonephritis, then renal abscess or septicemia, which can lead to septic shock and multi-organ failure.
Bilateral obstruction can cause irreversible renal failure.
Conventional treatment involves:
– Analgesics.
– Steroidal or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
– Antispasmodics.
– In some cases, urinary drainage via catheter (from the kidney to the bladder) to reduce intra-renal pressure and prevent kidney damage.
