Triglycerides:

Triglycerides are lipid compounds that form the body’s primary energy reserve.

  • The normal range is from 30 to 1.40 g/L, depending on age, gender, lifestyle, obesity, pregnancy, or the use of contraceptives.
  • High triglyceride levels can be a sign of acute pancreatitis, type 1 or 2 diabetes, hyperuricemia, kidney failure, carbohydrate intolerance, or myocardial infarction (heart attack).

Triglycerides come from food but can also be synthesized in the liver from sugars and alcohol. They are insoluble in water and are transported by specific lipoproteins.

  • Chylomicrons: transport dietary triglycerides from the small intestine to adipose tissues.
  • Very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL): transport triglycerides synthesized in the liver.

Role:

Triglycerides are a storage form of fatty acids within adipose tissues. They are composed of a glycerol backbone and three fatty acids.

  • They are the body’s primary source of energy and allow the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP)by hydrolyzing in adipocytes.
  • High triglyceride levels increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Advice:

  • Overweight, sedentary lifestyle, and consumption of rapid sugarscontribute to hypertriglyceridemia.
  • Triglyceride levels should not exceed 2 g/Lin blood. They become pathological between 4 and 5 g/L, often accompanied by increased bad cholesterol (LDL) and decreased good cholesterol (HDL).
  • Eat healthily, exercise, and avoid stress.
