Cholesterol:

Cholesterol is a fatty acid essential for the body’s function, produced by the liver. It passes into the bile and is then absorbed by the intestines.

  • Two-thirdsof cholesterol comes from bile, while one-third comes from food intake.
  • Cholesterol is insoluble in bloodand requires proteins for transport:
  1. Low-density lipoproteins (LDL or “bad” cholesterol)transport cholesterol from the liver to the body.
  • High LDL levels are linked to cardiovascular risk.
  • Ideal level: below 1.99 g/L.
    1. High-density lipoproteins (HDL or “good” cholesterol)transport cholesterol back to the liver.
  • Normal level: 0.4 – 0.6 g/L.
  • High cholesterol levelslead to atherosclerotic plaque formation, consisting of:
    • A necrotic core
    • A fibrous layer
    • 10% cholesterol, 70% calcium & fibrinogen
  • This can result in myocardial infarction (heart attack).

The risk of atherosclerosis is proportional to the circulating lipoprotein concentration.

Role of Cholesterol:

Cholesterol is a major component of animal cell membranes.

  • It maintains membrane fluidity, preventing fatty acid crystallization.
  • At 37°C, it limits phospholipid movement, reducing membrane fluidity.
  • At lower temperatures, it prevents phospholipid crowding.
  • It helps form lipid rafts, anchoring functional proteins.
  • It contributes to neurotransmitter release during exocytosis.

Cholesterol is a precursor of several essential molecules, including:

  • Steroid hormones(cortisol, cortisone, aldosterone)
  • Sex steroid hormones(progesterone, estrogen, testosterone)
  • Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3)
  • Heme A
  • Phenyl proteins
  • Ubiquinone (coenzyme Q10)
  • Dolichol
  • Nuclear factor NF-kappa B
  • Tau protein
  • Bile salts

Causes of Hypercholesterolemia:

  • Genetic or familial origins:Hypercholesterolemia is not necessarily inherited by an entire generation but tends to run in families.
  • Medication use:Diuretics, corticosteroids, and some oral contraceptives.
  • Certain diseases:Kidney disease, thyroid disorders, diabetes.
  • Poor lifestyle habits & lack of physical activity.

Recommendations:

  • Avoidfried foods, cooking oils, fatty dairy products, and processed meats.
  • Opt forolive oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, and foods rich in Omega-3 & Omega-6.
