Menopause:
Menopause is a natural physiological process that marks the end of a woman’s fertile period; it is the permanent cessation of menstruation. It typically occurs around the age of 50, but there can be early menopause (around 40 years) and late menopause (after 55 years), with heredity playing an important role.
There are symptoms of perimenopause, occurring 2 to 3 years before menopause, characterized by changes in the menstrual cycle: irregular periods, light or heavy flow, closer or further apart cycles that may disappear for 1 or 2 months.
Physical Symptoms:
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Vaginal dryness and pain during intercourse
- Beginning of urinary incontinence due to pelvic floor relaxation or recurrent urogenital infections
- Joint pain
- Weight gain
- Hair loss
- Fatigue and lack of energy
Psychological Symptoms:
- Insomnia
- Irritability, tendency to cry more often, anxiety, depression
- Difficulty concentrating
- Memory loss
Causes of Menopause:
Menopause is caused by hormonal changes (a deficiency in estrogen), with the number of ovarian follicles dropping to less than 1000, whereas there were about 1 million oocytes at birth. Most of them are destroyed by apoptosis, and 400 to 500 eggs are released throughout the reproductive period.
Early menopause or primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) describes the cessation of hormonal function, resulting in disrupted menstrual cycles. It can be caused by:
- Autoimmune diseases (hypothyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, celiac disease, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, Graves’ disease, or Addison’s disease).
- History of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or ovarian surgery.
- Family history.
Late menopause can occur after the age of 55, and it is mostly genetic. It has advantages such as a reduction in cardiovascular diseases and beneficial effects on bones and osteoporosis. The later a woman begins menopause, the later the demineralization process starts due to prolonged estrogen exposure.
