The Liver:
The liver is the largest and most vascularized organ (approx. 1.5 kg, handling ~10% of total blood volume or 1.4 L per minute). Located in the upper abdomen and partially protected by ribs, it comprises four lobes (right, left, caudate, quadrate), subdivided into eight segments. The gallbladder is attached between the right and quadrate lobes.
Blood supply is via hepatic artery and portal vein. Bile is produced by liver lobules and flows through bile ducts into the common hepatic duct, then via the common bile duct into the intestine.
Vital functions include:
– Storage of carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.
– Regulation of blood glucose.
– Storage and release of vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K.
– Production of bile, bile acids, albumin, and immune proteins.
– Lipid metabolism (cholesterol synthesis/degradation).
– Storage of iron and vitamin B12.
– Conversion of nitrogenous waste into urea.
– Eliminating metabolic waste.
– Hormone metabolism and thermoregulation.
– Detoxification of dietary toxins and drug metabolites.
Since 1959, synthetic chemicals from agriculture, processed foods, medications, and pollution have burdened the liver beyond its detox capacity. The liver adjusts blood distribution according to physical activity to support muscles, filters, detoxifies, and maintains bile, blood, and lymph flow through continuous small movements.
Symptoms of Liver Disease:
Early symptoms are often mild. The disease’s course depends on individual predispositions and genetics. Symptoms appear when liver cells are inflamed or repairing:
– Dull pain in the upper right abdomen.
– Severe fatigue due to altered brain chemistry and hormone levels.
– Fever or chills.
– Weight loss and anorexia.
– Abnormal menstruation in women.
– Scrotal swelling or testicular atrophy in men.
In cirrhosis, additional symptoms appear:
– Jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes).
– Pruritus and skin plaques.
– Dark urine, pale stools (bile excretion failure).
– Bleeding or bruising (reduced platelet production).
– Stomach pain.
– Edema in legs, ankles, feet (fluid retention).
