Intestinal Parasitic Infections:
Intestinal worm infections are common. These parasites require a host organism to survive.
They often cause no symptoms, but some individuals experience anal itching.
Transmission occurs orally: parasites may be present on contaminated food or surfaces. When hands are not washed properly, the parasites are ingested.
Pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis) are small white worms a few millimeters long. Females lay eggs around the anus, causing itching, especially at night.
Tapeworms (taenia) come from undercooked infected pork or beef, and develop into solitary intestinal worms.
Ascariasis is caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, a large roundworm found in contaminated water or poorly washed food.
Hepatic hydatid disease is caused by a dog-transmitted parasite. After reaching the intestine, the parasite penetrates the intestinal wall and migrates to the liver (or lungs), forming cysts.
Liver fluke infections are transmitted via contaminated vegetables or undercooked meat. The larvae hatch in the intestine and migrate to the liver.
If left untreated, parasitic infections may lead to systemic health deterioration.
The standard treatment is anti-helminthic therapy, using a vermifuge in tablet or liquid form, over a prescribed period, to eliminate both adult worms and unhatched eggs.
