1. Flu:

The flu is a contagious infectious disease caused by the flu virus (A-B-C-D strains) in seasonal epidemic outbreaks during the autumn-winter period.

Symptoms include fever, headaches, cough, pharyngitis, muscle aches, fatigue, and anorexia. It can progress to secondary bacterial pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, acute pulmonary edema due to left heart failure, myocarditis, rhabdomyolysis, or lymphocytic meningitis.

2. Cold:

The common cold is an infection of the nasal passages and throat caused by a virus. It leads to a sore throat, sneezing, congestion, runny nose, pharyngitis, conjunctivitis, muscle aches, fatigue, headaches, and loss of appetite.

Complications may occur in individuals at risk (asthmatics, those with respiratory insufficiency) or weakened individuals (children, elderly, smokers).

The median duration of a common cold is 11 days. The body encounters and neutralizes cold viruses several times a year, but when a cold appears, it means the immune system has failed to prevent the infection.

It could be due to a bacterial superinfection (pneumococci), sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema, which can evolve into viral myocarditis.

3. Rhinitis:

Allergic rhinitis is an abnormal sensitization, an excessive immune system reaction to a foreign substance (allergen) such as plant pollen, molds, or animal hair. Upon contact with the eyes or respiratory tract, the immune system reacts, releasing histamine and other inflammatory substances, causing blood vessels to dilate. Symptoms include repeated sneezing, itching in the throat, palate, and nose, tearing, eye irritation, sinus pressure, and impaired taste, smell, and hearing.

Rhinitis can be vasomotor, persistent, and non-allergic. The affected person may appear constantly “cold” or congested. It occurs during stress, temperature or humidity changes, exposure to smoke, dust, mites, strong odors, chemicals, allergens in the environment (work, home), or in response to medication or hormonal changes.

Untreated rhinitis may worsen and lead to chronic sinusitis. It is linked to asthma, and in children, it increases the risk of middle ear infections. Genetic predisposition is a key factor in the causes of rhinitis. Those with an atopic background react to allergens that are usually harmless.

Advice:

  • Hygiene:Wash hands with soap or an alcohol-based solution after contact with an infected person.
  • Protection:Cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue to prevent the spread of droplets.
  • Avoid confined environmentsthat can increase exposure to viruses.
  • Diet:Zinc supplementation induces apoptosis in cells infected by the flu virus. A combination of zinc and copper is beneficial, as well as other trace elements, vitamins (A and E), and hydration.
  • Rest:Adequate rest is necessary for a good recovery.
