Urinary System:

The urinary tract consists of: two kidneys, two ureters leading to the bladder (a urine storage pouch with voluntary sphincter), and a single urethra (short in women, long in men traversing prostate and penis).

Kidney function:
They regulate body water, remove toxins, and produce hormones that regulate blood pressure, red blood cell formation, and calcium balance.
~120 L of blood are filtered daily, producing 1–2 L of urine composed of waste and excess fluid.

The urinary system is vulnerable to infections, which can become chronic and impair renal and urinary functions. Glomerular filtration may decrease by 50%.

Common urinary disorders include cystitis, urinary incontinence, renal failure, enuresis, renal colic, stones, vesicoureteral reflux, and cloudy or discolored urine.

Warning Signs:

– Pelvic pain.
– Increased frequency or urgency of urination.
– Dysuria (painful or burning urination).
– Pollakiuria (frequent small-volume urination).

Upper tract infections (ureter, renal pelvis, calyces) lead to high fever (39–40 °C), chills, flank pain, and general malaise. Lower tract infections (urethra, bladder) cause dysuria, hematuria, and malodorous urine.

Urinary obstruction can damage kidneys, cause stones, and hydonephrosis. Bilateral obstruction may lead to renal failure. In men, prostate hypertrophy or urethral stenosis often cause obstruction.

Bacteria such as Pseudomonas, Proteus, Enterococcus, P. aeruginosa may reach the urinary tract via blood, lymph, or ascension through the urethra.

Risk factors include:
– Female sex (short urethra, local contraceptive use).
– Stones, pelvic prolapse, reflux, immunosuppression, diabetes, corticosteroids.
– Not emptying bladder after intercourse.
– Urinary tract malformations.
